Housing that works for everyone
The Uptown Projection is a high-density, mixed-use architecture project that utilises the existing ventilation shaft in the site and gives an engaging visual performance that compliments Uptown’s vibrant character.
This project is significant as it recognises the creative people of Uptown, particularly film and performing arts students, and allows them to project their character to the public as a visual performance.
With the city's population rapidly expanding, there is an urgent demand for medium-density housing units.
In response, my design presents a unique approach to medium-density housing, combining functional, socially and culturally progressive, and aesthetically pleasing mixed commercial and residential spaces—an innovation rarely seen in popular destinations across Auckland.
The project is an example of how we can achieve higher densification without sacrificing quality of life and design.
52 units varying from studios to generous 3-bedroom apartments are available across both sites with a focus on urban farming with both shared growing and co-op farmers market underneath to buy and sell local goods.
Instead of designing to mitigate flood water damage, this project explores architecture that responds to the status of the flood-prone area—essentially creating architecture with a hidden character only seen by periods of heavy rainfall.
My design research found that adaptable architecture could be among the solutions to reducing flood damage to buildings.
Uptown’s vision for the future recognises a need and desire for alternative and diverse housing models. Consideration of adaptable, inter-generational living is also a part of Uptown’s future vision.
This building will create a space for families, couples, students, retired people, creatives to come together live, learn, play and share.
