7. 1864 Mr John Probert, Allot 12
Mr John Probert was discharged as a Corporal in the 80th Regiment in 1841 to live as a citizen in N.Z. He married Governor Hobson’s maid, Jane Froude, and was granted land where he established a Blacksmith Foundry in Upper Queen Street. He owned many properties. One of these was on the corner of Newton and Great North Road. In 1862, he subdivided this block of land but did not sell it. Instead, this enterprising man sold a 21yr lease to build and live on the land. A committed Wesleyan, he was known to be generous and frugal.
