& 1862 Mr David Burn, Allot 2
Scottish born David Burn was a trained journalist who emigrated from England to Melbourne Australia before moving to Auckland. Employed as an editor of the Daily Southern Cross and then the New Zealander in the early1850’s, he fell out of favour with both newspaper proprietors. He was re-employed as a journalist for The New Zealander for ten years until 1863 when he became the founding editor of the break away newspaper the New Zealand Herald. As both a journalist and editor of the Newspaper it is possible that Burns wrote the articles about Newton, ‘Advance Auckland’.
In March1862 David Burn sold Cotele, his advertisement states, ‘no puffing required to render this sale attractive’. However, he failed to say that he had tried to sell his house and land since 1852, and due to no purchasers he rented his property to various occupants. This included Major Gold who had, in 1859, led the battles in the Northern Taranaki War (1860 – 1861). (Refer to Timespanner’s blog – Cotele for more information).
This subdivision formed the South side of Newton Road, fronting onto Upper Symonds Street to New North Road and into the gully creating Dundonald and Exmouth Streets, and Basque Road. He also sold land on Karangahape Road, possibly purchased directly off Mr Stark’s land sale.
